Death Race DescriptionDrive a car over animated stick gremlins and score points. Gremlins that have been run over will scream and a cross will appear where they died. Two players compete against each other at the same time.Know anything more about this game? Cabinet InformationThe cabinet is black with white graphics of a muscle car racing through a cemetary with a big vulture in a tree looking on. The marquee and monitor bezel are quite colorful. A limited number had white sides with the artwork in black (instead of the reverse).Game PlayDrive around the field chasing down as many people as possible and run them over, turning them into instant tombstones, before the timer expires. Play with a friend to see who can make more tombstones quicker. After you run someone over, the game designers were nice enough to include a reverse gear to finish the victim off. There was a safe area where the cars cannot enter. The people you must chase look like car racers because they appear to be wearing helmets.MiscellaneousThis game is also known as Death Race 2000.VAPS Arcade CensusGAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETYUncommon - There are 16 known instances of Death Race owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 15 of them are original dedicated machines, and it is a set of circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired. Wanted - There are 7 VAPS members currently looking for Death Race. For Sale - There are 3 VAPS members with Death Race machines for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts. Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range. TechnicalThis game board is actually one of few that does not use a CPU.TriviaThis game is based on and inspired by the movie Death Race 2000. There were only 500 or so made. When it came out it was banned due to its violent content. In the mid-80's there were only believed to be three or four left in existance, but now more are popping up all the time. This is its note from Mametargets: The infamous banned-and-panned game of running over anyone and anything that crosses your path. Hard to believe that little collections of black and white pixels inspired such fervent alarm back then -- but of course something tells me that in 2025 people will take time out from their virtuality program "American Cannibal Wrestling: Marrow Crackdown," listen to a sound-bite history clip about the 25th anniversary of Congressional hearings in the year 2000 about violent video games, and wonder what all the fuss was about. Oh, and for the last time, "Death Race" is the title of the game, NOT "Death Race 2000." The latter was the title of a really bad Sly Stallone/David Carradine movie released the previous year with the same general premise; probably Exidy was hoping for name recognition among the "Kewl Kar Killr" teenage boys who were that film's core audience. eBay ListingsClick here to automatically search eBay's Arcade, Jukebox, and Pinball categories for the Death Race Videogame machine and items related to it.Click here to automatically search eBay's Arcade, Jukebox, and Pinball categories for machines and parts made by Exidy .
