Double Dragon 3 - The Rosetta Stone Description

This is the third game in the series although there is little if any resemblence to the previous two titles. Players can choose to play Billy, Jimmy or Sonny who journey and fight throughout America, China, Japan, Italy and Egypt in search of the three Rosetta Stones. There are shops on each level that allow the player to purchase power-ups for depositing additional credits.

Cabinet Information

The game was relased only as a conversion kit.

Conversion

The boardset can be configured to be installed in either two- or three-player cabinets.

Game Play

The specialty moves that can be purchased are as follows:
  • One armed-stand head butt - Press Punch and Jump.
  • Ankle grab-head flip - Press Punch and Jump.
  • Running head-butt - Press Punch and Jump.

Other moves are:

  • Hurricane Kick
  • Triangle Jump Kick
  • Belly to Back Throw
  • Back to Back Hurricane Kick

The bosses are as follows:

  • "Mission 1 (America)": Jim - After Willy was defeated for good in Double Dragon II, his younger brother, Jim, decided to take his place as the leader of the Black Warriors. He's not very skilled at fighting and you can take him out by merely using your basic kicks.
  • "Mission 2 (China)": Li - Kung-Fu master and keeper of the first Rosetta Stone. He is not very tough at first, but eventually he will take out his tonfa and use it agaisnt you.
  • "Mission 3 (Japan)": Ranzou - A very skilled ninjas. Watch out for hist shurikens. Eventually he will split into three, but you only need to concentrate on one.
  • "Mission 4 (Italy)": Juliano - Be careful of this gladiator. He has a long-ranged spear and will try to block your jump kicks with his shield. He reappears in Mission 5, only the battle will be more difficult due to a Chakran that keeps bouncing on the walls.
  • "Mission 5A (Egypt)": Hiruko - After the defeating the Golems, Hiruko will show her true colors. Despite her abilty to throw fireballs, she's not very tough and can easily be defeated.
  • "Mission 5B": The Mummy. She is a very tough opponent and likes to throw a lot. She is also very fast. If you defeat her, she will reveal her true form, which is none other than...
  • Cleopatra -- probably the cheapest boss in this game. She flies a lot to each side and likes to throw you magically to the walls. She can throw fireballs at you as well.

Extra Guys: If you buy an Extra Guy at the beginning of each stage, they will replace your defeault fighter (the Lee brothers: Billy, Jimmy or Sonny) after he dies. Keep in mind that the backup fighter cannot learn new tricks or nor use weapons.

  • Urquidez Brothers (1P: Roney, 2P: Sunny, 3P: Jonny) are very strong and tall, but are a bit hard to control due to their huge size. They can be hired during Missions 1 (America) and 5 (Egypt)
  • Chin Brothers(1P: Seimei, 2P: Taimei, 3P: Sinmei) can easily deplete an enemy's energy with their fists, but they are very slow. They can be hired in China (Mission 2).
  • Ooyama Brothers (1P: Masao, 2P: Kunio, 3P: Akira) are very fast, but they are also small and fragile. They can be hired in Japan (Mission 3).

    Weapons:

    • A Ninjatou can be bought in Japan and Egypt (Missions 3 and 5 respectively)
    • A set of nunchakus can only be found in China (Mission 2).

    Miscellaneous

The Japanese version of the game allows you to choose your starting character (Lee, Chin, Ooyama and Urquidez).

    VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Common - There are 21 known instances of Double Dragon 3 - The Rosetta Stone owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 3 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 18 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,121 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 15 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - We currently do not know of any VAPS members that have gotten around to adding this game to their wish list. The wish-list system is fairly new (not all VAPS members have filled one out) and there are probably a number of collectors who might purchase this game if offered one at the right price. There is one VAPS member looking for a Double Dragon 3 - The Rosetta Stone circuit board set.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

    Trivia

The first two Double Dragon games were made by Technos, but this game was made an outside team. However, Technos did create the Famicom/NES version of this same game.
