Game Introduction

The Competition in Mortal Kombat II was a complete setup by Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung. When the Battle ended between Shao Kahn and Lui Kang, Kahn's great scheme was hatched. Shao Kahn's deceased wife was caused to be reborn of the human world by Shang Tsung 10 millenia ago so that Kahn would be allowed to claim the earth as his own. Shang Tsung has been granted more power from Kahn for hatching this conspiracy, yet Tsung remains instrumental. Stealing all human souls for himself, Kahn has found that the God Of Thunder (And Rock N' Roll), Raiden, cannot fight in the Earth realm as it has become a part of the Outworld itself. Kahn finds himself delighted. However, Raiden has been able to protect several souls from Kahn's clutches. Sonya and Jax have not only a common mission to destory Kahn's rule, but to detain their No. 1 criminal Kano, as he has beg Kahn to spare him in exchange for training the outworld warriors to use Earth Weapons. Kahn has placed a new Shokan dragon, Sheeva, as the bodyguard for Sindel. But Sheeva has discovered that Kahn has placed a race of Centaur warriors to exterminate the remaining humans. On The Outworld, The Centaurs are the natural enemy of the Shokan dragons and she questions Kahn's ambition. Lui Kang and Kung Lao have only a common goal to destroy Kahn Forever. And Sub-Zero II, has now been declared a marked man by his own clan as they have been changed to soulless cyborgs. Two of them, the loyal Cyrax and Sektor have been sent to kill Sub-Zero, who has shed his mask, believes his best friend is dead, and plans to soak up his anger for Kahn. Sub-Zero may soon learn he does have an ally he believes is dead. Any Guesses? There are other fighters whose lifestyles are ordinary, Like riot cop Stryker, and unknown, like Nightwolf and Kabal. They have no choice but to overthrow Kahn's rule. And others such as Johnny Cage have died in their fight. Kahn may be more then they can handle. You will Fight as either an Earth or Outworld Warrior. Also, each character has its own unique ending and his or her own special moves, combos, and of course, fatalites. This sequel also has the addition of 'Animalities' which allows your kombatant to transform into an animal and perform a fatality.

Scarcity in collections (VAPS.org)

Common - There are 39 known instances of this game owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 13 of them are original dedicated machines, 8 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 18 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 52,045 video games (3,349 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 15 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There are 6 VAPS members currently looking for this game.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

SOUND: ADSP2150

The game uses Midway's Wolf Unit hardware.

Trivia

Many players claimed to have seen Sub-Zero morph into a polar bear in Mortal Kombat II. This may or may not have been the start of the animality concept.

In the bookkeeping screens for Mortal Kombat II, a line reads "Kano transformations". One can only wonder what significance this holds, but it apparently it does in Mortal Kombat 3. Sometimes, when Nightwolf's friendship is performed, he says, "I have never seen a Kano transformation" when he morphs into Raiden.
