Cabinet Information

The enclosure is almost identical to the classic Pac-Man yellow cabinet, but the marquee is replaced with a more modern Pac-Man image with arms and legs. It proclaims itself as being "EXCITING NEW".

Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

CHEAT: This is the same cheat as the original Pac-Man. If you need to take a breather at the start of a screen, go right and immediately up so that you are inside the right corner of the "T" shape. Remain facing up and the ghosts will never find you.

ANTI-CHEAT: It is impossible to work a pattern to clear the screen, as it done in the original Pac-Man, because a power pellet does not always turn all the ghosts blue.

Conversion

The game can be converted back to Pac-Man with the proper ROMS and CPU.

Game Introduction

The programming is is a lot like Pac-Man except that the maze is outlined in green instead of blue. The prizes that appear in the middle of the maze are cans of Coke, cocktails, green beans, cakes, gift-wrapped boxes, etc. Whenever Pac-Man eats an energizer, the ghosts not only turn blue but they also get apple stems on their heads. On later levels, sometimes only three of the ghosts turn blue.

Game Play

The game plays exactly like the original except that there are various events (apparently selected at random) that may or may not occur after Pac-Man eats one of the four power pellets. These events include but are not limited to: the maze's structure becoming temporarily invisible, the ghosts turning invisible while they are blue, or only three of the four ghosts turning blue. The prizes in the middle of the maze can also act as a power pellet. Another difference is that later in the game the maze's structure becomes permanently invisible. The scoring system is exactly the same as in the original Pac-Man game.

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Common - There are 27 known instances of Pac-Man Plus owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 14 of them are original dedicated machines, 5 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 8 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,121 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 13 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There is one VAPS member currently looking for Pac-Man Plus.

For Sale - There are 2 VAPS members with Pac-Man Plus machines for sale. There is one VAPS member with an extra Pac-Man Plus circuit board for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

An official conversion to the original Pac-Man PCB.
The game uses a Z80 microprocessor and a Namco 3-channel PSG for sounds.

Trivia

This game was among the many updates to Pac-Man created by Bally Midway that were authorized by Namco. These unauthorized sequels ultimately led to the termination of the licensing agreement between Namco and Bally Midway.
