Cabinet Information

There were possibly two different marquees. The control panel is generic looking with Sega written across it and the buttons are labled with triangular tin.

Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

Tricks: 5000 extra points per level for not pressing the Ninja Magic button. 20000 extra points per level for not shooting shurikens or bullets.

Game Introduction

The player goes through five missions, each with three to five scenes. The last scene is always the boss for that mission and a bonus stage follows that, if completed, awards the player one extra life.

Continues are possible on every level except for the last (fifth).

Game Play

The player must save all the hostages in each level before leaving the level.

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Very Common - There are 124 known instances of Shinobi owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 11 of them are original dedicated machines, 19 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 94 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,098 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 54 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There are 3 VAPS members currently looking for Shinobi. There is one VAPS member looking for a Shinobi circuit board set.

For Sale - There are 8 VAPS members with Shinobi machines for sale. There are 8 VAPS members with extra Shinobi circuit boards for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Trivia

Shinobi in Japanese means: stealing (into); spy; sneak thief; surreptitious visit to house of ill repute.

The Chinese character displayed on the title screen and in a few other places in the game is the character for Shinobi in Japanese.

Fixes

A common problem with Shinobi boards is that the board works fine, but the game no longer has sound. The problem is caused by a dead (or dying) battery that is embeded inside the custom glob located on the motherboard. The common fix is to replace the custom glob with a Z-80 CPU and update the image found on the B board's A7 ROM. The updated image can be found on many ROM image sites
