Description

A futuristic game show (actually 1999!) where one or two players attempt to collect prizes, cash and keys while fighting off hordes of attacking enemies. Travel from room to room in an attempt to reach the Pleasure Dome. The game is somewhat graphic in both player and opponent deaths.

Cabinet Information

The first series of cabinet was released with 19-inch monitors while the more common second series was fitted with 25-inch monitors.

Miscellaneous

Ah, the elusive Pleasure Domes. No description of Smash TV would be complete without it. So here is the scoop:
  • The Pleasure Domes only exist on games with ROM revision 8.00 ("L8 ROMs") and higher.
  • How do I get there?
    1. Collect keys. Every once and a while, a little "key" icon will be dropped onto the floor. According to the messages given at the start of each level on an L8 machine, you need ten keys to get in. Depending on how your game is set up, this can be difficult or impossible, unless you ...
    2. Go through the mazes in such a way as to get as many "$" rooms as possible. On the second level (i.e. the one following your victory over Mutoid Man), the nearest of these levels will start you off with a sprinkling, not of prizes but of keys. You should have no trouble picking up ten keys in this room alone.
    3. After defeating the Cobra Boss and entering the secret rooms, you'll eventually come to a room which will end with a choice of directions: right or down. Heading right will take you to the final battle with the Game Show Host. Heading down will take you into the Pleasure Domes. And yes, the visual effects (and prizes!) are well worth the hour or so of play it takes to see them.

Scarcity in collections (VAPS.org)

Very Common - There are 62 known instances of this game owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 32 of them are original dedicated machines, 7 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards have been placed in another game cabinet, and 23 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 42,694 video games (3,154 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 47 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There are 8 VAPS members currently looking for this game.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operatos might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.
