SubRoc-3D Description

A fairly strange first-person perspective shoot-em-up. The play involves switching between firing at underwater and air enemies. The interesting feature is that it is in 3-D thanks to a special eyepiece.

Cabinet Information

Game Introduction

SubRoc is a fairly boring shoot-em-up that has one special feature: 3D. The game itself is modelled after old submarine style games in which the player targets enemies through a "periscope" like eyepiece. The play is from a first person perspective, with enemies approaching from the air and underwater. The 3D effect is implemented as a pair of rotating disks in the eyepiece, along with a pair of shifted images displayed on the monitor. Each of these disks is painted half black, with the other half being clear. A circuit in the eyepiece synchronizes the two disks so that when one eye is covered by the black part of one disk, the other can see through the clear part of the second disk. The game had problems on location because the disks would get stuck occasionally. Usually, this was a result of the cheap Mabuchi motors used to spin them.

Miscellaneous

The title is an acronym for "Submarine-Rocket".

Scarcity in collections (VAPS.org)

Uncommon - There are 14 known instances of this game owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 12 of them are original dedicated machines, and 2 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 52,046 video games (3,349 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 9 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There is one VAPS member currently looking for this game.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.
