Tecmo Bowl Description

A side-scrolling, four-player American football game that can be played as two-on-two, one-on-two, etc. The game is somewhat primitive in that there is no play pattern selection; only the receiver can be selected before play begins. One player controls the QB, the other plays the wide receiver/running back.

Cabinet Information

The cabinet is very large -- 40-inches wide at the narrowest point and almost 46-inches at widest -- due to the monitor cavern on the removable back panel and the side-by-side monitor configuration. The side panels stick out where the control board rests, making this one impossible to fit through a standard household doorway.

Game Introduction

The most interesting feature of the game is the ability to shake off tacklers. Once an opponent has latched onto you, vigorously shake the joystick to break their tackle. This action provides an excellent workout for the forearms and biceps and also provides for great fun in four-player games.

CAPS/VAPS Arcade Census

There are 6,492 members of the Classic Arcade Preservation Society / Video Arcade Preservation Society, 3,731 whom participate in our arcade census project of games owned, wanted, or for sale. Census data currently includes 61,189 machines (3,630 unique titles).

Rare - There are 2 known instances of this machine owned by Tecmo Bowl collectors. Of these, 2 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

This game ranks a 1 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census ownership records.

Wanted - There is one VAPS member currently looking for Tecmo Bowl.

This game ranks a 3 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census want list records.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them even though arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses, while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up.

Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector.

In particular, since VAPS started out focusing on videogames, statistics for other types of machines should not (yet) be an indication of scarcity.

For a clue to value, look at absolute numbers of owners and potential owners above, compare a ratio of how many people want this game vs. how many people have this game (50%) and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

The monitors are difficult to adjust since you have to make sure the text sizes/locations are adequately matched. Difficult to do at best, especially if the monitors have never been replaced.
