Cabinet Information

The dedicated game was released in a dual monitor cabinet with each side supporting up to two players. There is a mirror mounted above the screens so that you can see the expressions of your opponent(s) during the game.

Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

A two-player trick is to have your teammate pick a receiver and go out for a pass. While running have him/her hit the button and the receiver's arms will go up, yet you have not thrown the ball yet. The defender has more than likely used his thrust and is now vunerable! It is possible to max the game score as well as complete gamebreakers!

Conversion

This game was released both as a dedicated machine and as an upgrade for the original Cyberball. The upgrade kit included ROMs and a special security chip called a "slapstick". This IC is required to convert original Cyberball to the Tournament Edition.

Game Introduction

This game can thought of as chess on a football field. The most unique feature of the game is the players; they are robots which move around on single and double track wheels, making the action smooth and fast. There are over 240 plays, including unique plays that are just for certain teams.

If you don't want to play a full game, players can choose to compete in a Gamebreaker. Here you try to complete ten pages of plays while earning money for stats. This is a great way to practice.

Game Play

The game is basically the same as standard football game with a few differences. The ball heats up after every play, so you must defuse the ball before it goes CRITICAL and explodes. You can only defuse the ball by getting to midfield or scoring a touchdown. The game has a unique one-player option where you get to choose the coach that you wish to play against. There are no field goals or punts!

On offense, players control the quarterback until the ball is passed or handed off to another player. On defense, the player chooses which position to play in the defensive backfield.

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Uncommon - There are 15 known instances of Tournament Cyberball 2072 owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 12 of them are original dedicated machines, 2 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and it is a set of circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,098 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 6 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There is one VAPS member currently looking for Tournament Cyberball 2072.

For Sale - There are 2 VAPS members with Tournament Cyberball 2072 machines for sale. There is one VAPS member with an extra Tournament Cyberball 2072 circuit board for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

Powered by twin Motorola 68000 CPUs with an additional proprietary sound board. The kit version of the game includes a JAMMA connector while the dedicated version uses basic MTA connectors.

Trivia

The creator of Cyberball, John Salwitz, still plays every day!

Fixes

When powering-up the machine, if there is no picture or the test mode appears, try resetting the test mode switch on the board just behind the right side coin door, next to the volume control dial.
