Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

There are structures called "Sol Citadels" hidden throughout the game. The targeting sight will briefly flash red whenever it is over one of these structures. Dropping a bomb at that spot will first uncover the silo-like object (worth 1000 points) and dropping another bomb on it will award another 1000 points.

There are also four special flags hidden at certain points in the game. Uncovering and flying over a special flag will award an extra life. The targeting sight will not flash when it is over a hidden flag.

Game Introduction

Xevious takes place on Earth. An invading alien race has set up shop, and it's up to the player to send 'em home. The game has a large number of different ground and air-based targets of either belligerent or non-belliegerent nature. In addition to the jumper-based difficulty levels, the game also adapts its difficulty to the player. If the player is successful against a type of attacker, an even deadlier type of attacker shows up to challenge the player.

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Very Common - There are 88 known instances of Xevious owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 60 of them are original dedicated machines, it is a conversion in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 27 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,098 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 50 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There are 3 VAPS members currently looking for Xevious. There is one VAPS member looking for a Xevious circuit board set.

For Sale - There are 6 VAPS members with Xevious machines for sale. There are 6 VAPS members with extra Xevious circuit boards for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

The game uses three Z80 microprocessors and a Namco 3-channel PSG for sounds. The original Namco boardset uses the "Namco Galaga" pinout while the Atari boardset has a unique pinout.

Trivia

Xevious actually consists of 16 areas even though there is no on-screen indication of the zone the player is currrently in. The areas are separated by a green forested section. Each time a life has been lost, the player ship starts at the beginning of the nearest area, either forwards or backwards in the terrain.

After area 16, the game cycles back to area 7. The special flags are in areas 1, 3, 5, and 7. The first mothership appears in area 4, the second in area 9, the third and fourth in area 14.

The theme music from Xevious was used during certain segments of the video arcade game-based television game show Starcade.

Atari actually produced a TV commercial, specifically for Xevious. They touted it as "The Atari game you cannot play at home." This may have been the first TV commercial for an arcade video game.
