Ataxx DescriptionA 1- or 2-player strategy game based on a 7x7 tiled grid. A player attempts to secure a greater number of tiles than his/her opponent by moving his/her playing pieces in a manner similar to checkers.Know anything more about this game? Cabinet InformationThe dedicated machine has a very large, colorful marquee that contains several red and blue "blobs". The control panel contains one red and one blue trackball and a button for each player. The more common conversion kit games use a joystick for cursor movement instead of a trackball.Game PlayThe object of the game is to fill the board with your colored pieces. This is done by moving your piece adjacent to your opponent's piece and turning his pieces to your color. Two types of moves can be made during the game: first, placing a piece adjacent to one of your own duplicates it; or second, a piece may be moved two spaces, but it will not be duplicated. The number and arrangement of obstacles in the playfield changes between each round, so strategies must be changed in order to accomodate these barriers.Eventually, all the empty spaces on the board are filled and the player with the most colored pieces wins. In single-player mode if the human player wins, he or she must face a more difficult computer opponent in the next round. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range. TechnicalThe pinout of the PCB appears to be JAMMA, but the game requires an adaptor in order for it to be used in a JAMMA system.Ataxx uses a 80186 IC and two Z80 ICs for sound. The 80186 is a microcontroller similar to the 8086 CPU that contains a couple of additional commands, two built-in timers and a DMA transfer unit. The multi I/O daughter board contains the 80186 (which controlls the 6x8-bit DACs and a 10-bit DAC) and 2 Z80s. TriviaThis game looks like a bit of a redesign. Ataxx is slightly different from all other Leland games.
