Cabinet Information

The game is housed in a massive cabinet -- an eight-player machine with eight set of identical controls. The monitor faces directly upwards and players look down onto it. There are mirrors overhead that allow passers-by to see the game action while people are playing.

Game Play

Race around the track, avoiding other cars and the walls. The car colors are purple, peach, yellow, green, light blue, white, red and dark blue.

Miscellaneous

A special panel was available on the game which allowed an attendant to determine player starting, etc.. This panel (essentially just a bunch of switches) was mounted in a box that was intended to be worn around the neck of the attendant.

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Very Rare - There is one known instance of Indy 800 owned by one of our 900 members. It is an original dedicated machine (not another machine converted with a kit).

Of the 57,098 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 1 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - We currently do not know of any VAPS members that have gotten around to adding this game to their wish list. The wish-list system is fairly new (not all VAPS members have filled one out) and there are probably a number of collectors who might purchase this game if offered one at the right price.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

This game has a truly massive game board. It is a card rack system, containing a board for each of the eight cars, sync, coin control and score boards. The monitor has a color 25-inch CRT.

Trivia

This machine takes up a phenomenal amount of floorspace; 16 square feet, which is truely massive for something from this era. It is rumoured that there is still one being operated at a large 'family entertainment center' in the US even today!
