Game Play

One or two players guide their agent through multi-story levels, killing a variety of masked enemies (armed with guns, grenades etc.) using a pistol or machine gun. Collect ammo by entering doors marked 'bullet' and 'arms'. The player can jump between floors using handrails and bannisters to reach doors or avoid enemies. Unlike Rolling Thunder, health is not lost by coming into contact with enemies. An optional level select allows the player to choose which level to start on after game over.

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Uncommon - There are 9 known instances of Rolling Thunder 2 owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 9 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,121 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 6 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - We currently do not know of any VAPS members that have gotten around to adding this game to their wish list. The wish-list system is fairly new (not all VAPS members have filled one out) and there are probably a number of collectors who might purchase this game if offered one at the right price.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

Powered by NAMCO's System 2 hardware, Rolling Thunder 2 features twin 68000 12MHZ processors and a 6809 processor. Consisting of a CPU board and a VIDEO board, the hardware allows for multi-layer parallax and sprite scaling featured in the game. The popular YM2151 FM synth chip, along with a multi-channel DAC provide excellent sound effects and music. The PCB has a 48-way connector to provide stereo sound (and other features not used by the game), and the game has adjustable balance, treble and bass controls on the board. Game options are set via a test mode and saved after power-off.

Trivia

Alledgedly never released outside Japan, Rolling Thunder 2 contains Japanese text only. A conversion of the game was available for the SEGA Megadrive/Genesisu that featured extra levels and cut-scenes, similar graphics (without sprite scaling) but inferior sound.
