Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

With regard to the US ROM Sets, it appears that the 'rygar' set is a bug fix release for 'rygar2' ROMs. The original version was probably renamed to 'rygar2' when the new, fixed 'rygar' set was created.

The differences between these revisions are:

  1. 'rygar2' has a bug in the code which lets player two start a game when player one is already playing. You need to set a DIP switch to enable this behaviour (it is usually on by default). If you press '2' while player one is playing a one-player game, 'rygar2' will check if you have one or more credits before it registers that you're now in a two-player game, but it won't deduct the credit.
  2. 'rygar2' has some code that's not in 'rygar'. It seems to be blanking out seven characters on the screen. Maybe it's removing the word 'player 2' or 'player 1'.
  3. In 'rygar2', if player two starts while player one is already playing, it says 'player 2' instead of 'player 1' at the top right.
  4. The first screen of 'rygar2' says "ALL RIGHT RESERVED" which is missing the 'S' that is present in 'rygar'.

On level 13 there is a hidden star that will award you 1000000 points!

Conversion

Any cabinet equipped with a Tehkan wiring harness will accept this PCB. The game only requires one joystick and two buttons. However, two joysticks and four buttons will be required if the game is installed in a cocktail cabinet.

Game Introduction

You play the part of a barbarian warrior trying to reclaim the land from an evil Dominator and his legions of minions. You have to fight your way through 27 rounds using a unique weapon that has a lethal razor sharp disk that is thrown at enemies!

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Common - There are 38 known instances of Rygar - Legendary Warrior owned by one of our 3,650 members who participate in our machine census project. Of these, 4 of them are original dedicated machines, 2 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 32 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 59,771 machines (3,517 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 20 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - We currently do not know of any VAPS members that have gotten around to adding this game to their wish list. The wish-list system is fairly new (not all VAPS members have filled one out) and there are probably a number of collectors who might purchase this game if offered one at the right price. There are 4 VAPS members looking for Rygar - Legendary Warrior board sets.

For Sale - There is one VAPS member with a Rygar - Legendary Warrior machine for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.
