Game Introduction

A fairly unique "cyber-fighter", Virtual On was one of the most original games of the era. Although classified as a fighter, the game plays out like a one-on-one deathmatch, where one Mech tries to destroy the other, using a variety of tactics such as aerial attacks, crouch attacks, close-combat weapons, long-range weapons, and others, such as evasive techniques. A very popular game in Japan.

Game Play

Players control one of eight different Mechs and take on another Mech, whether it's CPU or human controlled. The object is simple: seek and destroy the other Mech without being destroyed yourself.

With the dual yokes, many different moves can be performed. Moving both yokes in the same direction will allow fast movement, while using only one yoke in that direction allows normal movement. Moving the yokes apart allows the player to jump, while moving them towards each other allows the player to guard. Players can rotate clockwise by moving the right yoke forward and the left yoke backward, and vice versa for counter-clockwise rotation.

The top button on the yokes is the Dash button. As long as both yokes are moving forward, only one needs to be pressed to initiate a dash. The other button is the Fire button. The two buttons can fire three different weapons which differ between each Mech. Hitting one button on either side when locked-on from long-range fires a long-range weapon. When locked-in close, both buttons can be used to fire a close-combat weapon.
