Cabinet Information

Three cabinet types were created for this game: upright, fixed sitdown and a full-motion cockpit. The control panels each have back-lit instrument gauges. All the cabinets have similar styling that includes a dragon, the player character and racing stripes on the side.

Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

HINT: The enemies fire three types of projectiles at the main character: Energy Bullets (slow), Fireballs (faster), and Missiles (fastest). They are always fired directly at Space Harrier's current location, never elsewhere. As long as you move constantly without backtracking, you cannot be hit, and need only worry about dodging stationary objects.

BUG: Extra coins provide extra lives to continue the game. On the later levels, when your character is hit, it appears at times as if all extra lives are lost. The remaining credits are not lost. They just do not display properly.

Game Introduction

Several levels are similar to 3-D versions of other games. For instance, there is a psychedelic mushroom stage that looks somewhat like a Centipede landscape. Faces in another level look like those from Easter Island. Graphics and game flow are similar to other Sega games of the era such as After Burner and Out Run.

Game Play

The object is to shoot as many things as you can. Avoid running or flying into enemy projectiles and stationary objects. Battle the bosses, and move onto the next level. The game ends after you beat level 18 where you have to defeat almost all of the bosses, one after another, but not in the same order as they appear throughout the game.

Miscellaneous

The game does not register credits, just how many players (lives) you will have when you press start. If you have any extra lives at the end of the game, you cannot start a new game no matter how many quarters you dropped to get a ton of lives.

16 of the 18 levels have unique names (the other two are just bonus levels). They are (in order):

  1. Moot
  2. Geeza
  3. Amar
  4. Ceiciel
  5. Bonus
  6. Olisis
  7. Lucasia
  8. Ida
  9. Revi
  10. Minia
  11. Parms
  12. Bonus
  13. Drail
  14. Asute
  15. Vicel
  16. Natura
  17. Nark
  18. Absymbel

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Common - There are 26 known instances of Space Harrier owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, 25 of them are original dedicated machines, and it is a set of circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,098 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 7 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There are 4 VAPS members currently looking for Space Harrier.

For Sale - There are 4 VAPS members with Space Harrier machines for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

This game uses the same board system as Enduro Racer.

Trivia

Renderings of the classic Space Harrier and Hang-On games make a special apperance in the Sega Dreamcast title "Shenmue". During the game, simply enter the You Arcade in Dobuita and the machines can be found at the back of the arcade. You can also win a Sega Saturn version of Space Harrier (which actually existed in Japan, as part of the "Sega Ages" series) in a raffle at the Tomato Convinence Mart.
