Cabinet Information

The side art shows a photo of Batman standing next to the Batmobile. The cabinet above is a conversion of a William's Blaster (which is also similar to the Duramold Bubbles, but that cabinet was blue). The monitor bezel shows some photo stills from the movie.

A cocktail version was released in Japan only.

The cabinet was manufactured by Atari in 1991.

An alternate marquee contains instructions and an item list.

Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

When you push the test mode button, go to game options and set difficulty to Easy. Exit the test mode by pushing the test mode button. While in Gotham City (stage 1), enemies do not come out of the door, but they will again in later stages.

Conversion

The PCB board can be swapped for any number of other JAMMA games such as Rolling Thunder, RoboCop, Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja, Haunted Castle, and many others.

Game Introduction

When the platform is higher than you can jump, fire the Batrope upwards.

Game Play

Common enemies appear throughout the game, shooting guns and throwing knives at Batman. The player character's energy is displayed using the Batman logo -- three hits, and you are dead.

This game features realistic sounds. and voices from the movie:

  • Batman - "I'm Batman.", "Be careful.", "Hold on!", "Get in the car.", "Shields Open!".
  • Joker - "Wait till they get a load of me!", "The pen is truly mightier than a sword!", "Why did somebody tell me that he had one of those things!!", "He stole my balloons!", "I do not know the art, but I like it.", "Daddy is going to make some art, darling.", "Can be truce. I have a bat in my belfry.", "Shall we dance (ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha)!", "Come to me!", "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?", "You would not hit a guy with glasses? Huh, would you?", "Well, it's time to retire.", "I'm glad, you are dead.", "Just the two of us. Mano E. Mano.", "Nice outfit." "Get those wonderful toys!".

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Uncommon - There are 12 known instances of Batman owned by one of our 900 members. Of these, It is an original dedicated machine., 5 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 6 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 57,113 video games (3,420 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 5 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There is one VAPS member currently looking for Batman.

For Sale - There is one VAPS member with a Batman machine for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Technical

There are DIP switches to change and set options such as free play. Other configurable options include difficuty, extra life score, and high score table. There is no cabinet (upright/cocktail) setting so if you put the PCB in a cocktail cabinet, the screen will not flip between player one and two.

Trivia

This game was only released as a conversion kit. Rumor has it that 1000 were made. It is based upon the movie of the same name.

Even though there is another game called Batman Forever, the two are technically unrelated to each other since they were created by different companies.

In May 1939, Batman's first appearance in Detective Comics #27 by Bob Kane (1915-1998). The Batman TV Series debuted on ABC in January 12, 1966. In June 23, 1989, The first Batman Movie opened in theaters, and in several months, the video tape was released in the markets.
