Crazy Taxi Description

A driving game where you drive a taxi cab, picking up passengers and dropping them off at random destinations.

Cheats, Tricks and Bugs

You can perform a 'Crazy Dash' after comming to a dead stop by shifting into drive and flooring the gas, in one quick motion. You will take off at full speed! However this is a tricky maneuver so you will have to practice it until you perfect it!

Reverse the Game Play
Normally when you begin playing the game, your taxi is already headed forward, and your first available fairs generally want to go to the Street Car stop. If you HOLD the gear selector in REVERSE while HOLDING the BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR before you press start to begin the game, when you start, your taxi will be facing the opposite direction, and a whole new route of fairs begins.

Game Introduction

The game allows you to choose one of four drivers to drive the taxi cab: Axel, B.D. Joe, Gena and Gus.

Game Play

At the beginning of the game, you select a driver for the taxi cab. Next, you drive the cab around the city and when you see a person standing in a red, yellow or green circle, use your brake to stop and the person will get into the cab. Then, you earn money by driving that person to wherever he or she wants to go before he or she grows impatient and gets out of the cab.

Whenever you make it to an area indicated entirely by green, use the brake to drop off your customer. You must try to get as many customers as you can before time runs out. The faster you get a passenger to the desired destination, the more money (and bonus time) you will earn.

While taking a customer to the requested destination, you must follow the green arrow while avoiding on-coming traffic and various other obstacles. When time expires, you will be rated on how well you did based upon how many customers you delivered and much money you earned. The game ends afterwards, regardless of the results.

Additional money can be earned by driving like a maniac - weaving through traffic, jumping off of strategically placed ramps, or the infamous downhill jumps (where you can catch some serious air, San Francisco Rush style), among other stunts. At the end of the game, your score is tallied up and you are awarded a license according to how much money you earned during the game:

  • $0 - $999 = Class E License
  • $1000 - $1999 = Class D License
  • $2000 - $2999 = Class C License
  • $3000 - $3999 = Class B License
  • $4000 - $4999 = Class A License
  • $5000 - $9999 = Class S License (allows you to view the ending, and watch some of your best dropoffs!)
  • $10000 - $20000 = AWESOME! License
  • 20000+ = CRAZY! License

Miscellaneous

Part of Sega's "Professional Series" (over-the-top job simulations much like Midway's sports games.)

VAPS Arcade Census

GAMES OWNED, WANTED, or FOR SALE BY MEMBERS OF THE VIDEO ARCADE PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Uncommon - There are 8 known instances of Crazy Taxi owned by one of our 3,650 members who participate in our machine census project. Of these, 6 of them are original dedicated machines, it is a conversion in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and it is a set of circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Of the 59,767 machines (3,520 unique) tracked by the Video Game Preservation Society, this game ranks a 5 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most commonly seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on ownership records.

Wanted - There are 8 VAPS members currently looking for Crazy Taxi.

For Sale - There are 3 VAPS members with Crazy Taxi machines for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operators might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up. Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector. For a clue to value, compare how many people have this game vs. how many people want this game and then click on the eBay links to help determine an accurate price range.

Trivia

The soundtrack was done by The Offspring and Bad Religion.
